Nailed It...

Besides from playing around with clothes I also have fun doing random, cool things with my nails. I'm always trying to do these cool things I see on the internet and put my own personal twist on things. Recently we bought this really pretty pink called "Cocktail Passion", its kinda my obsession when it comes to nail colour for the moment. It is SO pretty and girly but its strong enough to be a statement. So I decided to play around with Cocktail Passion and a simple nude colour and of course a few sparkles were added to finish it off.

So here's how I did it...

First of all, paint your full nail with the base colour, I just chose to do one coat, but its purely up to you and how good the nail polish is. Then wait for it to be dried completely. Once it is dried then you take those French Manicure tip guides (can also use sello tape) and decide what kind of a line you want across your nails. Apply the tip guides to all of your fingers to start off with as it gets a bit tricky trying to apply them when you have one hand with wet nail polish. Make 100% sure that they are stuck down completely, or else there will be space for the colour to bleed and then it doesn't look great.

Next you will use your desired colour and paint over the base, generally make sure that the base colour is lighter than the top or else it will be hard to not have it shine through and you won't get the full effect. Again, wait for it to dry completely, then do a second coat of the colour and wait for it to dry 100%. If you don't wait for it to be dried all the way then there is a big chance of the colour just peeling off when you peel off the stickers and that sucks (BIG time). So when all the nails are dry, gently peel off the stickers and admire your work.
We are not done yet (if you like sparkles). Those little self adhesive diamantes that you can get from a scrap booking store are usually used on my nails more than anything :) I think it ends up looking pretty cool, it just gives a cool finished effect. What I did was I added a single diamante to each nail right at the bottom where the two colours meet. If you do your nails with a different curve, then all you gota do it see where you think it will look best. Its all about playing around and seeing what you like the most.

Voila!
The end result. I was very happy with the way my nails turned out in the end and I had fun doing it. Plus, it really didn't even take me too long (awesome!) Just don't forget to apply a top coat to the nails, especially over the diamantes, it will act as glue and help to keep them where you want them. :)

So.. My advice... Have fun with colours and styles and don't be afraid to try something out of the norm. If you think it looks super cool then it most probably does AND if you're happy with it then what else matters?

Enjoy experimenting :)

RIHANNA!

So I was one of the lucky ones who got to go to the Rihanna concert here in Cape Town. EEEEEEK! Excitement prevailed that day :) Not only was I looking forward to the concert but I was also pretty keen to see what everyone was going to be rocking. Some weird and wonderful things were seen, I must say. Just think of all the cool (and not so cool) outfits Rihanna has worn, then change it up a bit to fit street fashion and bam, you know what I saw. Most girls that went to the show went totally all out with their outfits and that's cool, dedicated fans til the end. There was even one girl that had an "R" shaved into her hair and a heart around it, that's a bit too cray for me, but whatever floats everyone's boats hey.

As for Rihanna, I must say I was a tad disappointed. When I think of Rihanna I think of someone who always wears AWESOME outfits and just look at her music videos, always a big show. So the fact that she didn't have even one costume change was a let down for me. The entire time my friend and I were saying "maybe she'll change now" but comes out in the same thing. The biggest change she had was taking her leopard print jacket off, yay :/ But even though that was a disappointment for me, it was still a really cool concert and I had TONS of fun as I know everyone else did! I still think she's awesome and beyond beautiful.

Just a few pics to show the fun we had that night.
AMAAAAZING!!

What to wear...

Another week has come and gone and I hope it has been FABULOUS! It sure was for me. Lots of running around but still having fun while being busy busy busy.

So, what I have come to realize is that sometimes we don't always know how to dress for a situation. This is something very important that we all need to master. I am the first to say I LOVE dressing up and looking my best, but that doesn't always have to be in a ball gown. We can still look our best in jeans and a fun tee, as long as our outfit is appropriate for what we are going to be doing and we feel comfortable and confident then that's all that counts.
That's just my little two cents about things :)

~ ~ ~

Now lets take a look at my week of fashion fun.

Lately I seem to have a bit of an obsession with my leather jackets. Don't ask why. I just feel cool and a little edgy when I wear them. This black one is my favourite that I own. It goes with anything and everything. Throw it on with a tank top, jeans and a funky pair of military heels and bam, perfect outfit for a chilled night at class.

I am OBSESSED with these pants! Leopard print is always a winner in my books (when done tastefully of course). They are the comfiest pants I own and can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. For the day I paired the outfit with a pair of cute tan wedges while I was out and about but decided to dress down a little to watch the boyfriend play cricket. Still keeping things pretty and fab just better suited.

I don't know how long I have had this top for, a good few years and I still love it. Everything is about it is awesome to me. The colour, the fabric, the way it sits, the shape, EVERYTHING. This is one of my 'go-to' tops for when I'm not really sure what I want to wear. The cool thing is that this top talks for itself, I don't need to wear a lot of accessories and I can wear simple pants. With that being said, this top and the pants in the previous pic look amaze together as well. Two statement pieces together can be done, don't be scared to try, it's all about the fun of it.

This dress is so simple and plain yet it makes a statement of its own. Love, love, love, this dress and the days I feel like doing a little extra I throw this on and a cool pair of shoes and yay I feel pretty for the day :) The only thing I would have changed about this outfit is instead of grey stockings I would have worn black stockings. But I'm not really into the grunge look with ladders and holes :)

Lace & Denim ... Blue & Pink
I absolutely love the combination of lace and denim together. It's sophisticated mixed with a bit of laid back chicness. To me,  nothing is more ladylike and feminine than wearing lace, in whatever form you desire. A friend of mine would often tell me when he thinks of me he thinks of lace, we go together like best friends. Pairing up the pretty pink lace with a cut off sleeve cropped jacket just added a fun playful touch to the over all look. It showed that I was going somewhere and wanting to look my best but still being able to show some character with the cute jacket. A simple black tank top doesn't take away from the outfit and simple gold sandals just add the finishing touches.

I hope that everyone has a spectacular week and don't forget to try new and exciting things!
As for me, I will catch up with you all after a fun night out at the Rihanna concert!

"Street Wear" Melissa Style

Hello Beautiful People! Its finally the weekend, time to relax, have some fun and experiment with some fashion. YAY!

Okay so a lot of people think that I can't pull of street fashion (kinda true), its just not really my style. I am more of the girly girl that loves to dress up and be all pretty and feel feminine. But at the same time I have my tom boyish moments and that's okay. Us girls can't be too fragile now can we? It makes life a little more fun when we can show the boys that we are way tougher than they think {under estimaters :) }

So this morning when I woke up and did my usual 10 minute, okay okay, 30 minute stare at my wardrobe. I decided to try something different to my usual dresses or flowy soft items. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE my jeans, but now that its going into summer, the dresses definitely take preference. As I said, try something different, hence "Street Wear" Melissa style.

Jeans. T-Shirt. Sneakers.

I think this is as far as it goes for me and street wear. I love the casual, down to earth, hipster fashion that everyone is wearing these days and it suits SO many people, I just don't think its always my vibe. Definitely is something cool and fun to play around with, who knows, maybe I will be inspired to go all out hipster one of these days just for the fun of it.
And just to add a little touch of my girly flair I had to add the lace waistcoat, couldn't help myself.

~ ~ ~

This weekend I shall challenge myself to wear items that are different and outside of the box. I have a feeling its going to be a FUN weekend!

Speaking of 'FUN'

Chopped

EEEEEK!!!

Ever just felt like having a big change? Change things up to have some fun and add a new element to things in life? Well that's exactly what I was thinking and feeling. Hence, the Chop! Long to short is a major change and something everyone would have to get used to, but luckily for me I've done the short hair before so I was super excited to go back to the cute pixie cut. Weirdly enough, I feel more girly and confident with short hair.

So here's to being brave and rocking the pixie

Here we go..

Ever wondered what goes into what a person wears on a day to day basis? Well Style Diary is going to take you right there - into the thought process, planning and putting together of daily looks for all occasions. Who cares if there isn't even any specific occasion  I LOVE dressing up and having fun with fashion, this is my way of expressing myself and showing who I really am.

So, lets take it away...

Yip.. This is me, Melissa.

This look for me was all about the black and white contrast. There is something really elegant and sheek about that combination. Just a simple tank top paired with a pretty, high-waist mullet skirt and look what we end up with, comfort while still looking stylish and fun. Of course the perfect pair of wedges and the fun red belt tie the look together and make it pop.

While the weather is still feeling a little confused and not too sure if the sun wants to shine or the rain wants to fall, be sure to keep your winter warms close by, just in case. A simple jersey dress can be totally transformed into a sexy little look for a fun day on the town by throwing on a pair of heels and a a few flirty accessories. Don't forget to add a pop of colour to keep things fun and interesting.

Lets get together and have a good time.
A day out with the friends is always fun. You know what else is also fun? Playing around with your 'comfy' clothes. No-one wants to be all glamed up when they are going to a braai and watching the rugby. Nothing beats the simple and oh so amazing denim shirt (yes, its a mans shirt, but so what?). Put this together with your favourite pair of leggings and throw over a slouchy jersey and you have a winner look that will still get everyone talking.

Sushi with your best friend is definitely a reason to make yourself look pretty and girly, but then again, I find any excuse for that. A simple chiffon dress teamed with plain black leggings (we don't do see-through) and a simple pair of black ankle boots and you have a winner. What girl doesn't LOVE the soft feel of chiffon falling perfectly on her body that accentuates the right places and covers the embarrassing places?

I am an absolute lover of dresses. Nothing makes me feel more feminine than when I step into a dress. I love soft, flowing fabrics that are going to add to the soft feel of being a girl. Never shy away from a dress if you think it is too short. Where there's a will there's a way. There is always a way of wearing the shorter dresses while still being modest and covered up. TIGHTS! I would be lost without my leggings, tights and stockings, they are absolute life savers.

FRILLS, PINK and PRETTINESS.
Life is always much better with those three things. There is something childlike yet sophisticated about frills. This dress almost reminds me of being a little ballerina when I was small. All I wanted to do was spin around and see it flare out. If like me, you don't always feel comfortable wearing a strapless, its super simple, add a cropped cardigan and you're set. If you're going to be doing a lot of walking like I was this day why not go for something more fun and playful like the sneakers? Comfort is key in certain situations.

~ ~ ~

That's it from me for now. Remember to always have fun when dressing yourself and never be afraid of trying something new, you never know if you'll like a certain style until you try it on and walk around in it for a while :)
